Background:
Kam Air is an airline headquartered in the Kabul Business Centre in Kabul, Afghanistan. It operates scheduled domestic passenger services and international services to the Middle East, Asian republics and from August 2010 also to Vienna, Austria in Europe. Its main base is Kabul International Airport. The airline was founded on 31 August 2003 by Zamarai M. Kamgar and was the first privately owned passenger airline in Afghanistan. Its first flight operated on 8 November 2003 between Kabul, Herat and Mazari Sharif with a Boeing 727. Kam Air's first plane was provided by General Abdul Rashid Dostum as payment for supplying Dostum’s army with fuel and food.
Afghan private airline Kam Air has suspended flights to the United Arab Emirates saying competition from foreign airlines has made the route unviable for the carrier.(20121114)
The Wall Street Journal reported 20130126 that the US military has blacklisted Kam Air after an investigation found that the carrier has transported large quantities of opium on civilian flights to Tajikistan.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai protects the financially and politically-powerful ally, dubious Kam Air owner Zamari Kamgar (who steadfastly denied the US military's accusations about drug smuggling). Airline owner Kamgar played a powerful role in securing Hamid Karzai's return to power in 2009 elections. He helped to broker a peace between ethnic Uzbek warlord Rashid Dostum and Karzai that shored up the president's vote machine in key parts of the country. Now, with new elections due in April 2014, Karzai needs all the allies he can get to deliver the vote, even though he won't be a candidate due to term limits. ISAF spokesman Col. Thomas said “ that the evidence of Kam Air smuggling opium was clear”. It may have been clear to ISAF. But the Afghan investigation is now complete and - surprise! - appears to have completely exonerated Kam Air. And it appears the US government is fine with that. (20140124)
