Background:
This university in Mazar-i-Sharif (Balkh Province) was established in 1986. At the beginning this university had Engineering, History and Literature, Agriculture faculties, later in 1986 (same year) a medical faculty was also established and merged with Balkh University. Other faculties: Law 26 Political Science faculty since 1992, Shariya faculty since 1993 and Education faculty since 2002. This University has 8 faculties with the total 5553 students that 3718 are male and 1835 of them are female. 239 professors are teaching that 181 are male and 51 of them are female teachers. (2008)
USAID launched the University Support and Workforce Development Program’s (USWDP) first Associate Degree in Business Accounting in Afghanistan in October 2017, with technical expertise provided by the University of Massachusetts in the United States. The two-and-a-half-year degree program offers university-level preparation for specific jobs in the public and private sectors, as well as for those who want to start their own businesses as independent entrepreneurs. The first cohort comprising 22 students, including two women, will graduate in September 2019.(20180213)

Balkh University will now benefit from the financial autonomy bylaw that allows designated public universities to generate and manage revenue from its professional and academic services. The university will also be able to use the generated revenues for the expansion and development of the university and its educational programs, including research and innovation. The US Agency for International Development (USAID),  has supported Balkh University with technical expertise to reach this point.  USAID’s project with the university was through its University Support and Workforce Development Program (USWDP). They conducted an in-depth financial management study and shared the results with the university and the leadership of the MoHE.(20181029)
