3. Biodata:

Dr. Faramarz Tamanna, son of Abdul Karim and Rahima Amirzada, was born 1977 in Herat. He completed the elementary school in Herat, secondary school in Tehran, and the final years of high school in Mawlana Abdul Rahman Jami School back in Herat. He took the university entrance exam in 1994 and was admitted to the Faculty of Economics at Herat University. After the Taliban’s invasion of Herat, he transferred to Kabul University and received a degree in Economics. When Taliban took over Kabul, he moved back to his hometown, Herat. In 1997, he was granted a scholarship from the Faculty of Economics and Political Sciences in Shahid Beheshti University of Tehran. He started a second bachelor’s degree, but this time in Political Science. He received his BA in 2001, and started his graduate studies at the same university in 2003. He received his BA in 2001, and started my graduate studies at the same university in 2003. He received an MA in International Relations in 2006. His thesis was titled: “The United States Strategies to Combat Terrorism: The Case of Post-9/11 Afghanistan.”

In 2006, after several examinations and interviews, he was admitted to the PhD program in International Relations at Tehran University on a scholarship from Afghanistan. He was studying there till 2010, when he wrote his doctoral dissertation on “India-Pakistan Disputes and their Impact on the Continuation of Insecurity in Afghanistan after the Deposition of Zahir Shah.”
When he returned to Afghanistan in 2010, he intended to continue his academic life as a postdoctoral scholar. He was not able to find a suitable postdoctoral position in any of the universities in the region. As a result, he submitted his application for a second PhD to the School of International Studies (SIS) of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in India. He went through several exams and interviews again to enter a PhD program in Security Studies. In 2014, he defended his dissertation on “Security Problem in Afghanistan: A Study of Domestic Factors” using a theoretical approach to Constructivism.


Faramarz Tamanna is the author of two books (“Afghanistan’s Foreign Policy” and “US Foreign Policy towards Afghanistan”)

Before registering to run for the presidential elections, he was head of the Centre for Strategic Studies of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He has been teaching as lecturer in different universities for the last ten years.

Faramarz Tamana (20190113) registered for Presidential Election 2019 along with Sayed Qeyas Saeedi (Pashtun who worked for UNICEF)  and Mohammad Amin Reshadat (Hazara) who is the chancellor of a private university in Kabul, as his first and second deputy. (20190117) He is the head of Tadbir wa Tawse’a (Prudence and Development) team.

Tamanna tied the knot with Humaria Qaderi in September 1999, but divorced his spouse in August 2016, after he decided to marry his student Arzo Nuristani -- the daughter of Hawa Alam Nuristani, incumbent head of the Independent Election Commission (IEC). Faramarz Tamanna is married to Arezou Nooristani. His wife, Arezou Nooristani, holds a Master’s degree in International Relations and is working in the Office of the Spokesperson and the Directorate General for Public Information of the Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She is also teaching at the University of Afghanistan.

Faramarz Tamanna, a presidential candidate and son-in-law of Hawa Alam Nooristani, the chief of Independent Election Commission joins president Mohammad Ashraf Ghani’s electoral team, president office reported on Sunday, Dec 8, 2019.  Faramarz Tamanna is a close ally and business partner of Amrullah Saleh, the vice-president candidate for Ashraf Ghani Ahamadzai's  ‘Government Builder’ team. Tamanna and Saleh have jointly created the ‘Afghanistan Institute of Higher Education’, a private educational institution. Abdul Latif Pedram, another presidential candidate in a Facebook post stated that Faramarz Tamanna has endorsed President Ghani is for his personal interest.(20191209)


Tamanna and his wife Arezu have two sons: Siawash and Afrasiab.
