Mullah Nanai Mawlawi Nani was born 1961 in Aghandab District, Kadahar Province. He belongs to the Ishaqzai tribe. Nani lost one leg in 1980. He has served in some key positions within the Taliban. He worked as deputy head of the Peshawar commission, Minister of Public Works, Balkh governor and Herat governor in the Taliban regime (1996 to 2001). Nanai also enjoys close ties with Haqqani network and was leading the Taliban war in the eastern regions of Afghanistan.
 

Ahmadullah Muti alias Mullah Nanai who served as intelligence chief under slain Mullah Akhtar Mansoor had been arrested by Pakistani authorities. Nanai was picked up in Oct 2016 from Balochistan. Suleman Agha, the Taliban governor for Daykund province, and Mullah Sani, also known as Samad Sani, chief of a religious school and a well-known trader, who have links with the Taliban, had also been taken into custody. Mullah Nanai, some Taliban sources say, was recently appointed as the Taliban Chief Justice by Maulvi Haibatullah. He was one of the few top Taliban leaders who had been involved in wooing dissident Taliban leaders to declare support for Akhtar Mansour.(20161012)
 

In September 2017, Afghanistan’s National Security Adviser Hanif Atmar confirmed his country offered exchange of prisoners and wanted repatriation of five Afghan Taliban leaders detained by Pakistan including Mullah Nanai for a Pakistani Taliban leader, Mufti Khalid, who was arrested after the Taliban 2014 brutal attack on the army public school in Peshawar.

Mufti Khalid, who was using the name of Mohammad Khorasani had spoken to the media to claim the responsibility and was arrested in Afghanistan’s eastern Nangarhar province.

Pakistan has freed senior Afghan Taliban figure Ahmadullah Muti, alias Mullah Nanai, after nearly 17 months' detention.(20180312)
