Mrs. Latifa Sultani is the national coordinator for women's rights at the Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission AIHRC in Kabul.

Latifa Sultani, women's rights programme coordinator in AIHRC, said a total of 1,026 case of violence against women have been logged by regional and provincial offices of the commission in the past three months that indicates a 48-percent surge in violence against women compared to same period of time last year.(20110804)

Sultani said the proposals, which include allowing men to beat their wives under certain circumstances, were troubling. “We are concerned about the increasing growth of fundamentalist thought,” she said. “Women already face various restrictions on a daily basis.” Sultani said the AIHRC would be seeking a meeting with the Islamic council in the near future.(20120307)
