A Chinese company, CNPC,  will jointly explore with the Afghan firm, Watan Group, gas and oil reserves in the Qashqari, Bazaar Kami and Zamrudsai areas of Sar-i-Pul.(20111226) Unsurprisingly, the CNPC chose the Watan Group as its local partner. Watan is owned by the Popal brothers who are cousins of Karzai. According to a New York Times report, Watan's largest shareholder could be Qayum Karzai, brother of President Karzai, who denies it.(20120613)
