Peace Jirga Eastern Zone Deputy of the peace Jirga: Muhammad Hashim Ghamsharik (20091112)
Background: Governors of the four eastern provinces Kunar, Laghman, Nuristan and Nangahar have decided in October 2009 to establish a Peace and Development Jirga. There is 20-member executive council with five representatives from each of the provinces to operate the day-to-day business of the organization. A 12-member committee was formed during 20091110 meeting. Six of its members are from Nangarhar while the rest are from the provinces of Laghman, Kunar and Nuristan. The peace jirga in the eastern zone demands from the government to enter a dialogue with opponents to restore peace in the country. The jirga would help address the economic, security and social problems of the eastern provinces. |
