Mrs. Gaisu Yari was born 1988 in Afghanistan. After she turned 18, Yari said, she escaped a forced engagement and fled to the United States with the help of American soldiers. The same pro-Taliban commander who had forced her father to agree to Yari’s engagement with his son then demanded Yari’s older sister as a bride, she said. When her father refused, she said, he was kidnapped in 2000 and has not been heard from since. She returned to Afghanistan 2015 with a master’s degree from Columbia University and now works as a government civil service commissioner.
Miss Yari has work experience with national and international organizations. She has worked as Research Consultant for some time at the Center for Civilians in Conflict (CIVIC) and through this institution, she has assessed the impact of war on civilians in most provinces including Ghazni, Kandahar, Helmand, Badakhshan and Kunduz. Likewise, Yari has worked as Assistant Professor of Persian Language at the University of Virginia, as intern at the Feminist Majority Foundation and as Gender Trainer at the ZOA-International.

Furthermore, Miss Yari has worked as Consultant/Program Manager at Paiwand-E-Emroz Social and Cultural Organization, as Consultant/Agency Liaison with the Ministry of Women’s Affairs at the Asia Foundation and as Technical Assistant at the Huda Development Organization.
