The UCI announced on Tuesday July 16, 2024 that it has suspended Afghanistan Cycling Federation President Fazli Ahmad Fazli for 15 months for breaches of the UCI Code of Ethics. Fazli was accused of sending abusive and threatening messages to athletes during and after the mass evacuation from the country following the Taliban takeover of the government.(20240716)
In the case involving the President of the Afghanistan Cycling Federation, Fazli Ahmad Fazli, the UCI Ethics Commission has decided to impose a period of suspension from all cycling-related activities for a period of 15 months, as from notification of the operative part of the decision.
In 2021, the UCI and Afghan cycling federation organized an evacuation for cyclists amid the Taliban’s takeover. However, reports from CyclingTips and Velo suggested the Afghan Cycling Federation may have manipulated the evacuation list. That meant leaving behind certain threatened national team members. The report said that some cyclists and staff were favoured over others. The UCI investigated the allegations and announced the ban on Tuesday, July 16 2024.. |
