Background:

Although a similar branch was there during the decade of Communist era under the name of “Elaboration Management Studies” but CSS was established as an affiliated body under Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan in August 2003, after 9/11 range of events. In the beginning, it was composition of two main departments; Center for Strategic Studies and Institute of Diplomacy. Its mission was to provide objective assessments of issues relating to national, regional and international issues. The initiative for setting up the Center came from the ongoing international situation in post 2001.
