Bashir Qanet, a former Hezb-i-Islami commander still has armed men under his control. His men seized a mosque in Char Ab District, Takhar Province and opened fire on the worshippers. Chah Ab district mosque’s Imam Mawlavi Mahfozullah said that he wanted to deliver a speech about injustice and the illegal activities of Qanet's men when the gunmen opened fire on the people. Previously, however, the imam had declared jihad against Qanet. His supporters said Mahfozullah had no right to do this. Residents said after Ramazan, close to 90 residents in the district were killed by Qanet's men. Recently a mosque imam was killed when he spoke out about illegal armed men in the district. This comes after three people were killed and six wounded in July 2017 after supporters of a Hizb-e-Islami commander and supporters of senator Afzal Shamil clashed in Chah Ab district.
Senator Afzal Shamil, a member of the Jamiat-e-Islami party, has charged that the loyalists of Hezb-e-Islami’s local commander Basheer Qanet have engaged in clashes with the men associated with Jamiat’s local commander Faizullah. He blamed Qanet’s men for disturbing law and order situation in the Chah-e-Aab district of the province. He went on to say Husain Jindi, a local commander linked to Qanet has killed ‘scores’ of people in the district.
Shamil charged that Qanet’s men have killed 22 people associated with Jamiat party. The Senator said clashes erupted when Jamiat’s men tried to stop Qanet’s men from smuggling narcotics.(20170708)
