Afghanistan National Horticulture Development Organization (ANHDO)


The Afghanistan National Horticulture Development Organization (ANHDO) is an Afghan non-governmental organization registered with the Ministry of Economy. ANHDO was funded in 2009 and is currently supported by the EU.
The mission of the organization is to support and develop Horticulture in Afghanistan, to link the Public sector and the private sector, to provide services for post harvest value chains and to act as a catalyst among the other organizations that work in horticulture and as a bridge between MAIL (Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock) and the private sector in horticulture.
The development of ANHDO is part of the EU and MAIL long term strategy for the development of horticulture (see Agriculture Master Plan (2009) and National Priority Program 2 (2012)).
ANHDO is headed by a board composed of well-qualified and committed agribusiness traders, input suppliers, horticulturists and economists and is partner of MAIL and the leading private organizations in the horticulture sector.

ANHDO has an excellent technical team of experienced national horticulturists in seven provinces. Moreover, it has an outstanding roster of international and national specialists in various fields of horticulture.
In November 2012 ANHDO took over from PHDPII the management of the 6 Perennial Horticulture Development Centers (PHDCs) in the MAIL farms of Kabul, Mazar, Kunduz, Herat, and Kandarhar.
In March 2013,MOU has been signed between MAIL, ANHDO and PHDPII, by which the MAIL endorsed that ANHDO become the custodian of the National Collection of Fruit varieties and responsible for the continuation of the adaptive research programme initiated by PHDP.
ANHDO Projects under implementation:


  • 2012-2015 (ongoing). Support to Afghanistan Private Sector Horticultural Development Transition Project (DCI- ASIE/2009/020-600. Ref. ECDEL/2012/006/L/G/AF). EU-Grant
  • 2013 (completed, follow up expected) Horticultural survey in Kapisa province and Sorobi district. Pôle de Developpement of the French Embassy.
  • 2013- 2016 (obtained provisional award; project to start in 2014) Support to the Development of the perennial horticulture private sector- 2013-2016 (Europe Aid/133-872/L/AF). EU-Grant.
  • ANHDO provided specialist technical assistance on quality standards and quality control laboratory tests to the EPA Laboratory of the Ministry of Commerce and to two private fruit processing companies (Ref. ANHDO report on “Post Harvest Value chain Analysis”, February 2013.)

 

The first Plant Biotechnology Laboratory in Afghanistan, established by AKF-A (Aga Khan Foundation-Afghanistan), financially supported by EC (European commission).The laboratory is located in Badam Bagh Kabul, the research area of Ministry of Agriculture Irrigation & livestock, Afghanistan. The overall objective of the project is to support and improve the horticulture sector of the country by improving the quality of planting material for propagation. The lab is working closely with PHDP (Perennial Horticulture Development Project) and his partners and verifies the health status of national and exotic germplasm of fruits trees to insure the distribution of only healthy and quality planting material to nursery growers and farmers. Each year plant samples are collected for lab analyses from various agro-ecological zones of Afghanistan. The lab is actively participating in policy dialogues for development of control strategies for various pest and diseases and improvement of nursery industry. The lab is well equipped with latest technologies and updated protocols are used for the detection and identification of diseases of fruit crops.
