Background:
The factory is currently having an amortization capacity of 400 tons of beet sugar a day and the factory is having a workforce of around 150 employees. Baghlan sugar factory has been reconstructed three years back with a less production capacity during the first year, which has increased in the recent years. The stored beet sugars will be put into production process within in the next one month, and 1 ton of sugar is produced by 10 to 15 tons of beet sugar. The seeds of beet sugar and chemical fertilizers were distributed without any charges to the farmers of Baghlan· Province to encourage them to harvest beet sugar in the future.

The New Baghlan Sugar Company (NBSC) started operations in 2005 after having been officially registered with AISA in January 2005 and at the Trade Court by the end of June 2005. Only then did the company become a legally established and complete private enterprise under Afghanistan’s legislation. At full capacity, the factory was designed to produce 15,000 MT of sugar per year, thus becoming an important economic activity in the area, providing not only direct employment opportunities, but contributing indirectly to additional economic activities and jobs. Given the much larger domestic demand for sugar, an expansion of the factory and a diversification of the production were envisaged by the shareholders as a mid-term objective. The brand name chosen for the sugar was “Shakare Baghlan”.
 

Baghlan sugar factory was built in the year 1938 and started to its production in the year 1940, where 800 to 900 tons of beet sugar was processed on a daily basis to produce sugar. The Baghlan Sugar Factory (BSF) was established in 1938 by the Kingdom of Afghanistan to satisfy the domestic demand for sugar with Bank Millie Afghan as the major shareholder and 100 members of the Royal and industrial elite of the country holding the remainder of the shares.

Two German companies gave their 38-percent joint share of the New Baghlan Sugar Factory to the government of Afghanistan, making it the sole owner of the factory.  The factory needs subsidies of $500,000 annually, but it is expected to turn a profit within the next 5 years. A major obstacle to the factory's productivity has been a shortage of beetroot.(20121216)

Set up in 1940, the New Baghlan Sugar Company was handed over to the Afghan government in December  8, 2012. The two German firms relinquished 38% of their joint share, making the Afghan government the sole owner of the factory.
 

The New Baghlan Sugar Company produced more than 570 tons of sugar during sugar beet cultivation season in 2013, while the production was only 254 tons of sugar in 2012 and 2011.

About 5,000 acres of land are used for growing sugar beet in Baghlan, and the factory operates for one and a half month in the season of the crops.

Director of the factory, Ghulam Sakhi said that they distributed sugar beets seeds along with two bags of fertilizers without any cost to farmers to help boost sugar beet production in the province. He added they bought one ton of sugar beet at 2,000 AFN from the farmers.(20140414)
