Background:
A meeting of journalists in Kabul from 16-17 December 2002 has appointed a Commission to establish an independent journalists' association with a national mandate. Journalists from 10 Afghan cities, meeting under the auspices of ARTICLE 19, Global Campaign for Free Expression, with the assistance of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), met for two days in Kabul to discuss how to establish an independent journalists' association. Participants at the meeting elected an 11-member commission with a mandate to take the necessary practical steps to establish the Independent Journalists' Union of Afghanistan. The Union will be open to all Afghan journalists and a particular effort will be made to ensure participation from outside Kabul. The Union will include within its mandate promoting professional journalism and addressing issues relating to freedom of the media, of expression and of information. Media practitioners and journalists from over 25 provinces in Afghanistan  assembled for a National Meeting and Media Summit in Kabul on from 2012 March 26,  to the 28. A new Chairman was also elected.
