Bawka District's  population is entirely Pashtun.

Growing and trafficking Poppy is much of the population’s main source of income, particularly in Bakwa, Bala Boluk, Khak-e Safid, Gulistan, Poshtrud and, less significantly, Purchaman districts, according to UNODC.
