Prof. Dr. Abdul Rahman Ashraf (Institute of Geo sciences, University of Tuebingen, Tuebingen, D-72076 Germany)· was born 02. July 1944 in Kabul and has over 39 years of university (Kabul/Afghanistan, Bonn, Tübingen/ Germany, Jilin, Shenyang/China) and public teaching, research, and administrative experience, both domestically and internationally in leadership positions. Dr. Ashraf has a Bachelor’s Diploma in Geology at Kabul University, a Master’s Diploma in Geology from Bonn University (Germany), a PhD at Bonn University, and a Professor’s Diploma from Jilin University (People’s Republic of China).
He began his career as an assistant professor and professor in Afghanistan, Germany, Philippines, China, and Brazil universities. His research area ranges from Devonian to recent stratigraphy and paleoclimate fields. Ashraf worked at Centrum für internationale Migration und Entwicklung (CIM) as an expert in Afghanistan since 2002.
Ashraf also worked to promote higher education in Afghanistan. He was named rector of the University of Kabul. In this capacity, he traveled through Germany and France in order to re-establish and revitalise old partnerships – such as those with the pharmaceutical and law faculties in Lyon and Paris.
Dr. Ashraf was a member of the Cabinet Meeting and a member of the President’s Economy and Energy Committees. A German Foreign Office spokeswoman confirmed that Abdul Rahman Ashraf, a geologist at the University of Tuebingen, had been nominated as Afghanistan's Ambassador to Berlin, Germany . His official recognition by German President Christian Wulff· was on 13. Dec. 2010.
Since 1966 Ashraf is married with his wife Mary. They have three children.
He speaks Dari, Farsi, German, French and English.
