Background:
Andarab was divided into two districts, Banu and Deh Salah Dehe Salah Dih Salah, in 2003 as a result of the growing political and military influence of the Andarabi commanders. As it is often the case in Afghanistan, district divisions create more sinecure. Tajiks make up the entire population of Andarab district.

In May 2026, Taliban supreme leader Hibatullah Akhundzada reportedly issued a decree introducing tighter regulation of gold-panning activities across Afghanistan. The stated aim was to bring artisanal mining under stricter government oversight and licensing. Taliban ban on gold panning in Andarab district delivers a direct economic shock to families’ livelihoods and the local economy.(20260731)
