Background:
The main prison in northern Balkh province is facing a severe overcrowding crisis with up to 70 inmates sharing one 11-square-metre cell, a delegation from the Attorney Generals Office said (20100512). About three years ago, the provincial government granted a piece of land for the prisons expansion. Some work had been done, but then it stopped for unknown reasons. There are about 700 inmates, including 30 women, at the prison (20100512).
