3. Biodata:
Mahdi_Dr-Dr. Mohiuddin Mahdi, was born 1955 in Andarab District, Baghlan Province. Mahdi holds a bachelor’s degree from Kabul Medical University, which he earned in 1978. He also has a master’s degree in Persian Language History from the Academy of Sciences at Tajikistan University. In addition, Mahdi has studied Management and Finance at the Bastan University of Kabul.

He is a Tajik from Panjshir, is one of Afghanistan’s most well-known intellectuals and is close to Karzai’s main 2009 presidential elections rival, Dr. Abdullah. During the 1970s, he was a sympathizer of a leftwing group called SAFZA which was influenced by Maoism. After the arrest and execution of its leader Bahruddin Bahes in 1979, the group disintegrated. Mehdi gradually became close to and finally joined Jamiat-e Islami. He is affiliated to Dr. Abdullah Abdullah.

As his mother is from Andarab, during the jihad he used to work as Andarab district commander of Shura-ye Nazar with Ahmad Shah Massud. In the 2005 Wolesi Jirga election he had been running in Kabul, without success. Now, together with Abdul Hafiz Mansur who got through in Kabul – another of the Islamist modernists and former editor-in-chief of Payyam-e Mujahed, the Jamiat mouthpiece - Mehdi might turn out to become the focal point for the anti-Karzai opposition in the parliament. He was also a potential strong candidate for the position of speaker of the Wolesi Jirga.

Over the last year (2011) Mahdi has been involved with the Reformist’s Forum in Kabul.

Commission (2012): Religious and Cultural Affairs, Education and Higher Education.
