Background:
Abu Dhabi-based firm GAAC Solutions signed an agreement to manage four airports, which are located in the Herat, Kabul and Kandahar and Mazar-i-Sharif. The 18-month contract makes GAAC Solutions responsible for offering ground handling services at these airports.

GAAC Solutions, a state-run firm based in Abu Dhabi, has taken charge of the international airports in the capital Kabul and three other major cities – Kandahar, Herat, and Mazar-e-Sharif, the Afghan Transport and Civil Aviation Ministry confirmed in a statement.

This agreement also includes security operations at all four airports, the ministry confirmed.

UAE-based Holding inked the third and final contract with the Taliban administration to operate the three major airports in Afghanistan. Ghulam Jelani Popal, the deputy head of Afghanistan transport and civil aviation ministry has said the contract is valid for ten years to reporters in Kabul.(20230510)

The contract covers only logistic activities at the airport and does not include airport security.

GAAC had managed ground operations at the Kabul airport until the Taliban took control of the region last August.

The company is said to have later played a key role in rehabilitating the facility.

UAE firm GAAC, was previously operating in Afghanistan. "The current contract is only for offering ground handling services," Hameedullah Akhundzada, Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation said at a press conference.

GAAC has provided these services at Kabul airport since November 2020, and played a key role in rehabilitating the facility in August 2021. "We are not a new face here," Ibrahim Morafi, regional director of GAAC said. "But GAAC signing the new contract will give confidence to international airlines to resume flights to Afghanistan," he said, without specifying when such flights -- including from the UAE -- were expected to resume.

Currently, two Afghan airlines -- Kam Air and Ariana Afghan -- fly to Dubai, Doha, Islamabad, and Tehran from Kabul airport. Iran's Mahan Air also operates flights to Kabul. (20220524)
