2001 Gamsharik, Haji Zaman Gamsharek returned to the region during the last year's US air strikes, first setting up a base in Peshawar before returning to Jalalabad 1997-200110. Lived in exile in Dijon, France. He is educated and multilingual, and is seen by many as an ideal candidate to lead eastern Afghanistans large ethnic Pashtun population .He had allegedly been given $100 per soldier in addition to food and clothes. But he was also rumoured to have had close links with both the Taleban and al-Qaeda and therefore sympathies and interests to let them escape as bloodlessly as possible. He has a US green card. Known to many as a ruthless player in the regional smuggling business, Ghamsharik was given a rousing party on his return, including a 1,000-gun salute. In his rimless glasses, Haji Zaman cuts an urbane figure. But this belies his violent past. He has been accused of ordering savage reprisals during the Afghan civil war in the early 1990s. Abdullah Tawheedi, a deputy head of intelligence in Afghanistan, says he has received "reliable information" that the terrorist leader paid a "large amount" of money to buy his way out of Afghanistan. Tawheedi named Haji Zaman as the man responsible for taking bin Laden across the border to Pakistan He (Haji Zaman) claimed that (Hazrat) Ali, who was police chief of Nangarhar during the Tora Bora campaign, helped bin Laden escape from Tora Bora.
