Matiullah Matie was born 1992 in Afghanistan. Matie was one of the Afghans who was rescued to the U.S. He arrived with his wife and six children and was among the first 85 evacuees that resettled in Wausau. He identified himself as a former senior advisor to the upper house of Afghanistan’s National Assembly and claimed to be the community leader in Wausau.

Matie, along with many other Afghan evacuees were airlifted 27th Aug 2021 out of the warzone. Then they underwent database checks at different locations in third countries. And finally, they were processed and released for settlement in the U.S.

Matie and his family flew to Qatar and then Germany. After undergoing the checking, they were flown to the U.S. in October 2021 and headed to Wisconsin in December.

He had become well known locally after serving as a sort of liaison between new Afghan arrivals and Marathon County, in central Wisconsin.On Wednesday, Feb. 2. Wausau Police said a victim reported she was assaulted by Matiullah Matie while in a vehicle on Wausau’s northeast side, Wisconsin, USA. The victim was identified as an acquaintance and was assisting Matie and his family in refugee resettlement.

As a result of the investigation, Matie was arrested Monday morning. He was released on a signature bond.

Matie is the patriarch of one of two families that resettled in Wausau recently from Afghanistan. He shared his story with NewsChannel 7 for on-camera interviews that aired on Jan. 24 and Jan. 31 during a newscasts. Police are recommending Matiullah Matie be charged with fourth-degree sexual assault.
