3. Biodata
Dr. Adib Farhadi was born June 16, 1972 in Afghanistan. He is the son of Abdul-Shakoor Farhadi and Maliha Farhadi, who have two children. Adibs father is a Professor at the school of Art, East Carolina University, Greenville, NC, USA. His mother, Maliha Farhadi, is a Library Technical Assistant, Teaching Resources Center, J. Y. Joyner Library, East Carolina University. Adib Farhadis parents left Afghanistan for the USA when he was a toddler and they moved from Kabul to Greenville. Growing up, his parents taught him Farsi, a Persian language common in Afghanistan.

Nothing is known about his school-education in Afghanistan. After graduating from East Carolina University, he studied international business at New York University. He began working part-time at the United Nations as economic adviser with the Afghanistan mission. Adib Farhadi, then 29, also taught business classes part-time at Pitt Community College in Greenville. Later he was director of economic affairs for Afghanistan's Foreign Ministry.

Adib Farhadi prepared to depart Afghanistan o/a January 4, 2010 to take up a fellowship at Australian National University and serve as Commercial Attache at the Afghan Consulate in Sydney.(20100104)

Farhadi was invited to participate as an expert to the Emerald Express Strategic Symposium Series:  “Shaping for Successful Transition in Afghanistan”  30-31 August 2011, Gray Research Center  Marine Corps University, Quantico, VA a CENTCOM session.

He was a Guest Scholar at the Central Asia-Caucasus Institute, SAIS. (20120404), attended a conference May 07 - 09, 2012 as Afghanistan Expert at University of South Florida (USF).

The Central Asia-Caucasus Institute (CACI) at the Johns Hopkins Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) released the institute’s report, “Finish the Job: Jump-Start Afghanistan’s Economy” on December 11, 2012. CACI chairman Prof. Frederick Starr was the report’s principal author with co-author Adib Farhadi, a CACI visiting scholar. (20121211)

Farhadi  is a Visiting Scholar at Johns Hopkins University and a Research Fellow and PhD candidate at ANZSOG Instiute for Governance, University of Canberra.(20121221)

Farhadi completed his Doctoral Thesis, “Stabilization for Sustainable Economic Growth in Fragile States: The Case for a Trade-Based Regional Economic Integration Silk Road Strategy” under the supervision of Professor Mark Evans.(20150517) He received his Ph.D. in Economics from University of Canberra, and holds a Master’s degree from New York University and undergraduate degree from East Carolina University. 

Dr. Farhadi earned a B.S. in Biology from East Carolina University, an M.A. in Liberal Studies from New York University, and a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Canberra. He has been a visiting scholar in the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University and a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Canberra, Institute for Governance & Policy Analysis.

Adib Farhadi Biography
Mr. Farhadi maintains more than a decade of progressive and diversified experience in different dimensions of conflict prevention, post-conflict reconstruction, economic development, and counterinsurgency. He has progressively held high levels of responsibility related to strategic coordination, policy planning, and monitoring and evaluation involving a range of international actors, including the Government of Afghanistan, United Nations, international financial institutions, bilateral donors, the military, and civil society organizations. As Deputy Minister of Commerce (June 2008 – March 2010), he served as the Government of Afghanistan’s Chief Trade Negotiator for WTO accession talks, as well as for the successful Afghanistan-Pakistan Transit and Trade Agreement. Mr. Farhadi has further managed a large national government office (more than 250 staff) for the development of national development, governance, and security sector reform strategies working closely with multilateral and bilateral partners. As Head of the Joint Coordination and Monitoring Board for the Afghanistan Compact, as well as Executive Director of the Afghanistan National Development Strategy, he led a team in the analysis, design, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation of Afghanistan’s counterinsurgency strategic framework. Mr. Farhadi combined a unique set of communications, analytical, writing, and managerial skills in development of policy papers and organization of international consultations – including international conferences in Tokyo 2002, Berlin 2004, Kabul 2004, London 2006, New Delhi 2006, Berlin 2007, New York 2007, Rome 2007, Tokyo 2008, Islamabad 2008, and Paris 2008 – towards the implementation of the national counterinsurgency strategy. Moreover, in conjunction with Provincial Reconstruction Teams in Afghanistan, he has provided authoritative advice, guidance, and technical assistance to provincial government officials, with an emphasis on teaching, coaching, and mentoring, to develop and strengthen sustainable capacity in the core competencies needed to successfully carry out governance responsibilities at the sub-national level. In this regard, Mr. Farhadi maintained close working relationships with military counterparts in the provinces to ensure coordination, information sharing, and integration of capacity development activities. He further led the High-Level Secretariat of the Afghanistan National Skills Development Program, served as an economic adviser to the Office of H.E. President Hamid Karzai, and was recognized by the United Nations for his efforts to champion the UN Millennium Development Goals in Afghanistan. His general policy research and expertise include the intersection of counterinsurgency, the role of Provincial Reconstruction Teams in Afghanistan recovery efforts, and priority economic policies and implementation of key programs to stabilize Afghanistan. In sum, Mr. Farhadi’s diverse experience, networks, and knowledge have prepared him to contribute to policy, strategy and research on the conflict-security-development nexus in Afghanistan and other fragile and conflict-affected states. He received a Masters Degree at New York University and a Bachelors Degree at East Carolina University.
