Background:
Afghan Post was established in 1878 by Afghanistan’s then ruler, Emir Sher Ali Khan, and was accepted into the Universal Postal Union in 1928.

Afghan Post, previously part of the Telecommunications and Information Technology Ministry, has been converted to an independent administration in compliance with a presidential decree issued on Sunday Jan 12, 2020. The decree contains eight articles and has asked the ministries concerned to organize work of Afghan Post Office. About 463 post offices are operating across Afghanistan currently.

In an effort to facilitate access to the banking services through branchless banking, a trilateral MOU was signed between Da Afghanistan Bank (DAB), Afghan Post, and Afghanistan Banking Association. The signing of this MOU is part of DAB’s efforts to to increase financial inclusion through expanding banking services and digital payments in Afghanistan, according to a statement from DAB. Based on this MoU, banks would be able to provide banking services in areas where they do not have branches, by using the Afghan Posts branches as bank’s agents.(20200907)
