Background:
The holding company BRS Ventures, belonging to UAE-based Indian tycoon Dr BR Shetty, has signed an agreement to take over two hospitals in Afghanistan. It  has signed a memorandum of understanding with Afghanistan's Ministry of Public Health to run the hospitals and establish a pharmaceutical manufacturing unit in Kabul. Under the deal, BRS Ventures will operate Sheikh Zayed Hospital (SZ) and Wazir Akbar Khan Hospital (WAK) under a public private partnership model. The hospitals will be a part of the BRS Ventures healthcare brand called BR Life. The agreement will be executed in two phases. SZ Hospital is an 82-bed hospital located in the heart of Kabul while WAK Hospital is a 210-bed super specialty hospital catering to over 72,000 patients annually. BRS Ventures will be responsible for the complete refurbishment of the hospitals, with operations set to start in the coming months.(20180804)

More Background:
Wazir Akbar Khan Hospital (WAKH) is the largest teaching hospital in Afghanistan (210 beds), with the largest residency training programs in the country (general surgery, orthopedics and internal medicine). It serves as the major referral and trauma center in Afghanistan, with approximately 600 patients admitted, 5,000 OPD consultations and 750 surgical procedures monthly. The hospital was handed over to the Ministry of Public Health in 2005 after years of renovations by technicians from the Norwegian Red Cross and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

A second section of the Wazir Mohammad Akbar Khan Emergency Hospital was inaugurated after being provided with modern equipment, an official said.

The section has 20 beds, a pharmacy, an X-ray plant and a laboratory equipped with sophisticated machines.In addition to improvement in health services, the department would enable patients to get treatment in Kabul instead of travelling abroad.14 emergency hospitals  equipped with modern facilities had been established in Kabul and different provinces of the country.(20151203)

Dr. Ferozuddin Feroz, Minister of Public Health of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan inaugurated the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Wazir Mohammad Akbar Khan Hospital. The Intensive Care Unit of the Wazir Mohammad Akbar Khan Hospital was constructed with standards and equipped with all modern medical equipment.(20170510)
