Mawlawi Muhammad Haq Khatib Maulavi Muhammad Haq Khatib lives in Kandahar Province and is a supporter of the present Government in Kabul. Some sources from Kandahar said Khateb was close to the Karzai family. Khatib was eminent Muslim cleric Maulavi Abdullah Fayaz's Deputy, who was assassinated in his office by unknown gunmen on June 1, 2005. Fayaz was assassinated just a week after organizing a grand council of 500 clerics that declared that the Taliban leader, Mullah Muhammad Omar, had been divested of his title of leader of the faithful, the highest religious title of the land, and declared it unlawful and against Islamic law to follow his orders to fight and kill. Khatib is a leading member of De Wolus Ghag (Voice of the People), a local political movement established recently (2018).
