Lt Gen Tariq Shah Bahrami Tareq Shah Bahrami was born in Char Bagh village of Qarghayee district of Laghman province in 1967.  After completion of primary education in Charbagh primary school and secondary education in Sayed Noor Muhamamd Shah high school in Kabul, he was enrolled to Military University and graduated in 1986 with a bachelor degree as second lieutenant. Later on, he received Senior Officers’ Training in 1988 and in 2014 he received his master’s degree in Martial Arts from Loyal command and General Staff College in United Kingdom.

His career with military started when he joined the army as Deputy Company Commander in 1986 and was promoted as commander. In 1988, he became a battalion Deputy Commander and later on in 1989 he became commander of the battalion. In 1990 he served as Senior Advisor the Documentation and Planning Department of Defense Ministry.

Bahrami spent the mujahedin and Taleban years in the Netherlands. After 2001, he returned to Afghanistan.

After the fall of the Taliban regime, Tariq Shah Bahrami served as the head of Documentation and liaison for the Re-establishing Afghan National Army Commission. In 2003 he became office in charge for the 201st Corps Commander and continued till 2008. From 2009 to 2012 he worked as Commander for 444 Commando Forces Unit in Helmand province.

His services as commander for 444 Commando Force Unit in Helmand province is commendable as he had shown strong resolve against enemies. Acting Minister Tariq Shah Bahrami while serving in Helmand province played an important role in retaking Marja, Nadali and Washir districts from Taliban by conducing complex military operations.

In 2012 he was appointed as General Manager of Planning and of Operations Directorate for Special Forces Units at the Interior Ministry.  In 2015 he joined the Office of the National Security Council (NSC) as the Head of National Coordination Center (TAWHED center) at the Brigadier General rank, and also worked as Director for the ONSC new tashkeel called Communication and Information Coordination Center at the Major General rank. His services at the General Directorate of Communication and Information Coordination for coordinating information at the national level and exchange of information are commendable.

Later on in 2016 Bahrami was promoted as Assistant to the Office of National Security Council for Commander and Chief of Armed Forces. In late 2016, he was appointed as Chief Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Interior Affairs. Though his tenure was short, but since he had a good knowledge of developments at the Interior Ministry, he brought some important reforms such as reforms in Tashkeel which will be considered as final Taskheel until 2018.

Most recently Tariq Shah Bahrami was appointed as Acting Defense Minister in a Presidential Decree.

President Ashraf Ghani has been criticized for promoting the acting defense minister, Tariq Shah Bahrami, four times since 2014 – from lieutenant colonel to the rank of lieutenant general. Military analysts have said the promotion in rank was given to him because of his close ties with the National Security Advisor’s office and not because of merit. Two years ago he was the secretary for the former head of the central corps in Kabul. He was then appointed as commander of the 444 Police Special Unit. During this time he studied in the UK on a scholarship and was promoted to the rank of head of army staff. He was then introduced as a senior deputy minister of interior for security five months ago and at the same time promoted to the rank of major general. This week he was again promoted to lieutenant general. (20170831)

Tariq Shah Bahrami received 141 confidence votes and was approved as minister of defense.(20171204)
