Background:
The Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock (MAIL) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) have officially opened a multi- product dairy processing plant in Jalalabad, Nangahar Province, the second largest city in Eastern Afghanistan. The is operated by Khatiz Dairy Union (KhDU) and managed by Dr Nesar Ahmad. (20150217) There are now 14 such cooperatives in the eastern Afghan province of Nangahar, all formed with assistance from IFAD. They are all part of the Khatiz Dairy Union (khatiz is the Pashtun word for ‘eastern') and their total membership currently stands at around 14,000, with more farmers applying on a daily basis. Membership costs a dollar a month. In return, the farmer receives training, advice on farm management, and feed supply. (20121012)
