Local Police (ALP) official, Mohammad Ashor Ashur, a well-known former Jehadi commander abandoned his Yumgan Valley district residence and along with his 12 fighters joined the Taliban. (20131128)

 

Background:
Yumgan is a valley that links Jurm to the Keran Menjan district. Over twenty azure mines in Yamgan, Jurm and Keran and Munjan districts have been illegally extracted. Commander Asadullah, Zulmai Mujadeddi`s (Mujadeddi is a Wolesi Jirga Member) brother and his relative Jawed has been illegally extracting the azure mines in these three districts. Asadullah owns five to six mines and sometimes force people to work in these mines.
Yamgan District Yumgan District has 30,000 inhabitants, 39 villages and is populated 100% by Tajik. The district is one of the 29 districts of Badakhshan Province in eastern Afghanistan. It was created in 2005 from part of Baharak District and is home to mostly Ismailies.
Taliban insurgents captured 27 of 40 police officers and officials who had taken refuge in a bunker, the government and the insurgents said 20140521, as they continued to besiege a district government complex in a remote corner of northern Afghanistan that until last year (2013) was considered one of the safest parts of the country.The other 13 officials retreated to the top of a hill in the Yamgan District Center and were holding off the insurgents, according to Gul Ahmad Bedar, the deputy governor of Badakhshan Province. He said one of the holdouts was the district police chief, Qand Agha.(20140522)
A self-proclaimed spokesman for the Taliban outfit Zabihullah Mujahid said the Taliban captured Yamgan district at 10:00 local time (0530 GMT) and the government forces retreated from the area.(20150606)

Yumgan district in Badakhshan Province fell to the Taliban following hours of clashes with security forces that raged after midnight on Saturday March 28, 2020, the Badakhshan provincial council confirmed. The district headquarters in Yumgan was overrun by Taliban fighters after heavy fighting, resulting in an undetermined number of casualties, provincial counselors said.The district was under Taliban influence for four years before coming under government forces' control September 2019. Sources within security institutions in Badakhshan said roads to the district have been closed, adding that there is a need for air support to the forces on the ground.(20200328)
