Background:

Zana Khan district is a mountainous district in Ghazni Province with more than 12,000 people living there (100% Pashtun). The district center is Dado. Continuing drought is the main problem as in the whole province. It seriously affects agriculture, the main source of income. Health and education services need serious improvement. Ther were reports that the district had fallen under the Taliban control.(20130428)

The Taliban have shadow District Commissioners in many Pashtun-dominated districts of Ghazni, including Andar, Dih Yak, Zana Khan, Gelan and Waghaz.
Of 19 districts in Ghazni, only Jaghori, Jaghato, Waghaz, Andar, Nahor, Qarabagh and Ab-Band districts have their chiefs present at district centers, while Ajiristan, Malistan, Gilan, Nawa, Muqur, Giro, Bahram Shahid, Wali Mohammad Shahid, Rashidan, Khwaja Omari, Zana Khan and Deh Yak districts have no chiefs so far. Security forces and the Taliban had been engaged in heavy clashes in Zana Khan district since Wednesday Aug 23, 2107 night. The insurgents captured the district and seized two tanks and a number of Ranger pick-ups.(20170824)
