Background:
Kohistan is located 125- kilometers south of Faryab provincial Capital Maimana city. The district capital is Lolash. Charsada district of Ghor provinces is located in its south, Kohistanat district of Sar-i-Pul in its east, in north shares borders with Garzivan and Pashton Kot districts as well as Jowand district of Badghis province lies in its west. Being a cold part of the province, the area remains under heavy snowfall in winter, leaving linking routs of the town with other parts of the province cut off for six long months. Population of the province touches the figure of 150,000 individuals with residents is associated with the occupation of agriculture and livestock. Wheat harvests yielded bumper crops in the district. The district served as a strong sanctuary of Mujahideen against the soviet troops and the Taliban. Kohistanat has low level of cultural and social activities with no hospital, paved roads and potable water.

After 130 ALP members surrendered, the Taliban insurgents have captured the district center of Kohistan in northern Faryab province of Afghanistan, local officials said Sunday Jul 23, 2017. The Afghan security forces have retaken the control of Kohistan district of northern Faryab province Tuesday night Jul 25, 2017, after three days of being under wing of the Taliban insurgents.

The second time that the center of Koohestan district falls to Taliban group was on 20180611.


The district has an Aimaq majority population, and one of the Taleban’s first two prominent commanders in the province after 2001 came from that community.
