Background
Qarqin District is a small boundary district in the northern part of Jowzjan Province, Afghanistan. It borders Turkmenistan to the north along the Amu Darya River, Khamyab District to the west, Mingajik and Mardyan districts to the aouth, and Balkh Province to the east. The population is 21,400 (2006). The district center is the town of Qarqin, which is situated on the bank of the Amu Darya River. There are many Afghan Turkmen living in the district.

Qarqin district in Jawzjan district could vanish if the Amo river is not tamed. Water levels have risen in recent years because of alterations in the natural course of the river in Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan.
 

The port of Keleft, the third largest port between Afghanistan and Turkmenistan, will be operational soon. Mullah Jura, commander of the Border Forces in the Qarqin district of Jawzjan province, told the media that the port would create many job opportunities.

The commercial port of Keleft is Afghanistan’s third largest border port with Turkmenistan, after the ports of Turgundi in Herat and Aqina in Faryab.(20211208)
