durrani_mariamMariam Durrani was born 1984 in Kandahar Province. She is from Hamid Karzai's Popolzai tribe. Mariam Durrani Maryam Durrani, whom occasionally is referred to by solely her first name Mariam, is a Member of Kandahar Provincial Council. She was elected to Kandahar's Provincial Council in 2005 with 2,464 votes, and was re-elected in 2009 with a significantly decreased 948 votes. She was allegedly a close friend of Ahmed Wali Karzai. Mariam Durrani was only 21 years old when she was elected to the Council. She is a member of a youth organization in Kandahar City.

US secretary of foreign affairs in is website has issued biographies of Mariam Durani, a member of Kandahar provincial council, is a director of a cultural association and owner of a women local radio and has been identified as an Afghan courageous woman.(20120307) The US Department of State nominated a member of the Kandahar Provincial Council, Maryam Durrani, for the 2012 International Women of Courage Award.

Maryam Dorrani also won the American Time Magazine Award for as the 100 influential people of the world in 2012. Dorrani runs a local radio ‘Merman’ (Woman) in the southern volatile province and leads a non-government organization (Khadija-e-Kobra), which usually works on women’s rights.

“As the founder and owner of a local radio in Kandahar which mainly focuses on women’s issues and as a member of Kandahar provincial council, she is working with extraordinary courage in the southern zone,” Time has said about Dorrani. (20120422) Attorney for Herat province, Maria Bashir and owner of a media group, Saad Mohseni had been awarded by the Time in 2011.

Mrs. Durani has survived multiple attacks on her life, including a suicide attack in 2009 that resulted in serious injury.
