wardak_minister_defenseGeneral Abdul Raheem Wardak, Rahim Waradak, son of Abdul Ghani, was born in Wardak Province in 1940. After graduating from Habibia High School, he joined the Cadet University. He completed further studies in the United States and Ali Naser Academy in Cairo, Egypt. He has served as a Lecturer in Cadet University and Assistant of Protocol of the Ministry of Defense.

Pir Sayyed Ahmad Gailani Gilani lead the National Islamic Front of Afghanistan party of which then Colonel Wardak was a member. Gailani and Mujaddadi were the two moderate leaders of the group of seven. He served as the military assistant of Muhaz-e-Milli, was the military assistant of the Tri- Lateral Unity, a member of Itehad-e-Mujahiddin, and commander of the Jihadi fronts of Muhaz-e-Milli. After the fall of communist regime, he was a member of the Security Committee of Kabul City, Chief of the Army Staff, Director of the Military Officers Society, Director of the Education Commission, member of the National Army Commission, Deputy Defense Minister, Director of Disarmament Program and Director of Reform of the National Army.

He has many literal works in Pashto, Dari and English. Abdurrahim Wardak has a son (Hamid Wardak) with an USA Passport, who is a powerful figure, who won or brokered plenty lucrative procurement contracts for ANA and who controls private security firms that have gotten security contracts without registering with the government (20091030).

The lower house of the parliament, approved the nomination of Abdul Rahim Wardak for the post of the defense minister in the new cabinet on 20100102. Wardak has secured 124 votes out of 232 in the secret voting process. It is his second term as a defense minister under President Karzai.

There are rumors that Abdul Rahim Wardak might be no longer be fit for his job as the Minister of Defense due to his age (71 years). He comes to work at 10.00 hrs and leaves at 14.00 hrs. Sometimes he falls asleep during office hours. These rumors are refuted and rated biased. However it is said that he might be a candidate to replace the Chairman National Security Council Dr. Dadfar Spanta. (20120218) Former member of the Academy of Sciences, Syed Akbar Folad said the defence minister has failed by advanced age. (20120810)

Defense Minister Abdul Rahim Wardak and Interior Minister Bismullah Mohammadi were voted out of office after Wolesi Jirga Members criticized them for failing to bring security to the country and protect top officials. They also accused the ministers of corruption.(20120804). President Hamid Karzai accepted on 20120805 a vote by the country's parliament to dismiss his two top security ministers, but ordered both to remain in their jobs pending replacement. Hamid Karzai reappointed the two men as acting ministers a day later, but Gen Wardak  said he would resign.(20120807)

Wardak was appointed senior security advisor after awarding him the Ghazi Amanullah Khan Medal, the highest state medal. (20120813). Abdul Rahim Wardak (Pashtun) was a candidate for the presdidential election 2014 with his two running mates First vice president, Shah Abdul Ahad Afzali (Tajik) and Second vice president, Sayed Hussian Anwari (Shiite/Hazara).

Wardak became on Sunday Mar 16, 2014 the second candidate to drop out of a presidential election race, with his departure possibly helping consolidate support for a candidate favoured by outgoing President Hamid Karzai.
Rahim Wardak was not considered a front runner in the April 5 election and he did not throw his support behind any other candidate.(20140316)

An Afghan police officer and a security guard have been killed in Kabul during a 24-hour standoff between police and the stepson Tamim Shansab of Afghanistan's former defense minister, Abdul Rahim Wardak. Six police officers and a journalist were also wounded in the gunbattle that began on December 3, 2018. An individual had filed a lawsuit against Shansab( a company owner)  claiming that the residence was his and that Shansab was living there illegally. The individual won all three trials in the case and Shansab was told to leave the residence in Shahr-i-Naw area in early November, but had so far refused.
