Maulvi Tarakhel, son of Maulvi Syed Razaq, lived in the Tarakhel area of Deh Sabz District of Kabul. He graduated from the Dew Band madrassa in Afghanistan. Tarakhel died after a long struggle with diabetes, his relatives said on Sunday, October 31, 2010. He was 90 years old. Tarakhel fled to Pakistan after the Soviet invasion in 1978. He joined Gulbaddin Hikmatyar’s Hizb-i-Islami Afghanistan (HIA) and was renowned for issuing a fatwa calling for jihad against the Soviets. He had thousands of students in Afghanistan and Pakistan, but on his return from Pakistan, he had no official duty. Tarakhel spent his entire life in the service of religion, people, his country and taught thousands of students. His death is a big loss for the country, director of Darul Ifta (Fatwa Department) of the Supreme Court, SiddiqUllah Muslim, said. Before Russian involvement in Afghanistan, his family had a madrassa in Tarakhel where people could receive religious education. A family member is Shahabuddin Tarakhel.

Haji Abdullah Mullah Beradar is a brother of Mullah Tarakhel.
