tanai_shanawazShah Nawaz Tanai Tanay was born 1948 in Afghanistan. He was chief of the Soviet-backed Afghan army during the 1980s, and launched a failed coup in 1990 against then-President Mohammad Najibullah. He later defected to the Taliban. He currently heads the Afghanistan Peace Movement, a party which seeks a bigger role in government for Pashtuns, religious figures and ex-jihadis, as well as ex-communists.
He is extremely critical of US policies which, in his view, perpetuate the rule of his former enemies in the principally Tajik Northern Alliance. Some sources claim that he has acted on behalf of elements within the Pakistani intelligence services. He is not openly campaigning for the 2009 election, and did not stand in the 2004 election. Tanai was a former member of the PDPA (Afghan Communist Party), and served as minister of defense from 1988 to 1990 under Dr. Najibullah.

Tanai, with Gulbuddin Hekmatyar's support, revolted against Dr. Najibullah's government in 1990. Tanai at one time also worked with the Taliban movement. Shah Nawaz Tanai has died at a hospital in the capital of Pakistan.(20220306)
