Dr. Ghulam Farooq Nijrabi was born 1954 in the village of Sherwani (Nijrab District) in Kapisa province. He is a medical lecturer and pediatric surgeon. The ethnic Tajik trained medical students at the Indira Gandhi hospital in India and returned to lecture in Kabul University in 1983.
Nijrabi has been working as a doctor for the last 25 years after graduating from the Kabul University. He is the head of Hezb-e-Istiqlal-e-Afghanistan party. He was a candidate in the presidential elections 2005 with his Vice-presidents: Abdul Fatah, Abdul Hanan. Activists of Hezb-e-Istiqlal campaigned for him in the northern provinces of Takhar, Kunduz and Faryab, the central provinces of Kapisa, Parwan, Bamian, Ghazni and Wardak, in the southern province of Logar and the eastern province of Nangarhar.
Currently he works as a pediatric surgeon at a private clinic in Kabul.
